You may be eligible to receive a portion of your money back from Medicare when you rent an Uplift Commode Assist. To qualify, you must have Medicare Part B coverage, and meet certain medical coverage criteria as determined by your physician.

Here are some common questions regarding Medicare reimbursement.

Will Medicare reimburse for an Uplift Commode Assist?
If so, how much is covered? If you qualify, Medicare will pay for 80% of the monthly Medicare allowable cost of renting your Uplift Commode Assist. The monthly rental allowable is $28.92 (except for Puerto Rico which is $34.73). The rental period can extend for up to 13 months. When the rental payments are completed, the "title" to the equipment will transfer to the end-user or beneficiary. Ask your Home Medical Equipment Provider for more details on Medicare in your state.

How do I know if I qualify?
Medicare has certain medical criteria that needs to be met before Medicare will pay for an Uplift Commode Assist. Medicare requires that your physician determine and document that the use of an Uplift Commode Assist is a medical necessity for you based on your medical condition.

  • A bedside commode is covered when you are physically incapable of utilizing regular toilet facilities. This would occur in the following situations:
    • You are confined to a single room, or
    • You are confined to one level of the home environment and there is no toilet on that level, or
    • You are confined to the home and there are no toilet facilities in the home.
  • You must have severe arthritis of the hip or knee, or have a severe neuromuscular disease.
  • The seat lift mechanism (i.e., Uplift Commode Assist) must be a part of your physician's course of treatment and be prescribed to effect improvement, or arrest or retard deterioration in your condition.
  • You must be completely incapable of standing up from a regular armchair or any chair in your home.
  • Once standing, you must have the ability to walk.

To see if you qualify, have your physician complete the Certificate of Medical Necessity (CMN) and return it to your Home Medical Equipment Provider for review.

How do I submit a claim to Medicare? What other information needs to be sent?
Once you have a completed CMN from your doctor, your Home Medical Equipment Provider will supply you with an Uplift Commode Assist and submit a claim to Medicare on your behalf. Medicare will process your claim and inform you of their payment decision in about 30-45 days.
